Subject: Public’s Help Sought in Gun Theft

Date: 2/8/2013

On February 1, 2013, at 7:28 a.m., Fort Collins Police Services responded to a report that several vehicles had been unlawfully entered in the Registry Ridge neighborhood located at the southwest corner of Trilby Road and Shields Avenue. One of the these vehicles was an unmarked sport utility vehicle belonging to the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office.

The vehicle is issued to a Patrol Sergeant who reported the following missing items: a portable radio, traffic spikes used to disable vehicles, a camouflage non-ballistic vest carrier with a Velcro panel that displays the word “Sheriff”, a .308 caliber rifle with scope, and a .223 caliber rifle. All serial numbers and appropriate descriptions have been provided to Fort Collins Police Services along with bulletins that were sent out to other law enforcement agencies in the region and across the State.

Fort Collins Police Services is the lead investigative agency on this case as the crime occurred within the city limits of Fort Collins. The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office has initiated an internal investigation to determine if policies and procedures pertaining to the storage and security of weapons were properly followed by the employee.

Due to the on-going investigations by both agencies no additional information will be released.
