Fraud Alert / Impersonating a Peace Officer 1/16/15

In the past 24 hours, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office has received five reports of citizens receiving telephone calls from someone claiming to be command staff personnel at LCSO. The suspect(s) making these calls uses the actual name of a high ranking member of the Sheriff’s Office and demands money to avoid arrest. The suspect(s) may say you have an outstanding arrest warrant or you missed jury duty and a warrant will be issued. In some incidents, the caller ID on your telephone may read (970) 498- 5100 which is the actual general information telephone number for the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect(s) states that in order to avoid immediate arrest by the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office, you must purchase Green Dot pre-paid debit cards in specified amounts. The next step in these scams is to have you provide the Green Dot card information to them so they can withdraw the money from an ATM. Fortunately, the citizens in these most recent incidents contacted LCSO to verify / report these telephone calls and they did not lose any money.

The names and telephone numbers being used by the suspect(s) can easily be obtained from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office website. If you receive a call like this, immediately hang up and call your local law enforcement agency. These criminals tend to target the more vulnerable population which often includes senior members of the community. Please share this information with your friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors.
